I am the proud teacher of a morning and afternoon class of four-year old kindergarten students. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and at times it can be difficult to find activities that will reach them all in a meaningful way. They spend their first year in school learning early academics and social-emotional skills to help them be respectful and responsible students.
My four and five year old students learn through a play-based curriculum that allows them to be curious, creative, and conscious in the classroom.
I love teaching the littlest learners in our school! My students are eager to come to school and enthusiastic about discovering and exploring new things. I strive to give my students meaningful experiences to create a love of learning that will stick with them throughout their educational career.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of manipulatives and other STEAM materials to be used for "tinker tubs" which students will use independently at the beginning of the day and throughout the year during center time. These tubs allow students to make a meaningful connection to our focus unit while giving them the hands-on opportunity to re-evaluate, re-design, and re-think problems with open-ended play and exploration. I am requesting funds for bear matching and sorting manipulatives to help students sort by color; nuts and bolts manipulatives to introduce shape matching and reinforce fine motor skills. Mini erasers in a variety of thematic shapes will be used as counters, and place markers in math and literacy activities. Students will use alphabet beads and lacing cords, alphabet stamps in kinetic sand to build words. They will also be challenged to build different objects using colorful interlocking STEAM discs.
At times, students are able to explore the materials any way they choose, while other times will be asked to complete a task - in turn strengthening fine and gross motor skills, experiencing risk-taking and problem-solving skills, sensory exploration, and of course aiding in creativity and self-expression.
Additionally, I am requesting a number of different consumable items to be used for art projects throughout the year, specifically process art. Process art is all about the experience students have while they're creating. It allows children to be themselves, and create what they want in an open-ended way, without following a specific set of directions. With 2 classes of 20 students each, we go through a lot of consumable items so I am requesting funds for washable fingerpaints; tissue paper; pipe cleaners; pony beads; liquid watercolors; brightly colored paper; do-a-dot markers; and colorful trays to display materials for student use.
