Teaching in a NYC Title I school, I am faced with the challenge of meeting the needs of my fourth graders. My class is made up of diverse learners including immigrants from various Caribbean islands, Asia, Middle East and Africa. Each of them has a different degree of educational exposure. Currently, my classroom has limited resources. A laptop would contribute to student progress in ELA and STEAM skills and maximize their learning. They will be more actively engaged and motivated to excel in all areas.
My Project
Theodore Von Karmen, "Scientists discover the world that exists, engineers create the world that never was."
This quote resonates with me because when students have opportunities to tinker, explore, and innovate with objects around them, they are able to make new discoveries about the world as they create new inventions.
Students need to be given chances to build and apply their understanding of scientific concepts through early exploration. Science is about knowing, but engineering is about doing. Children need to communicate with peers as they solve real word problems in the field of STEM. As children work with peers, they can problem -solve solutions and use their creativity to think of other ways to solve these problems. This school year my class is using the Amplify Science Program and this laptop will be used during the required simulations. They will be able to investigate and explore real world scientific phenomenon. They will use the information from these simulations to write argumentative tasks based on their findings. My goal is to create a small work station of laptops over time so that they will be provided with enrichment activities, This will allow them to increase their knowledge in math, science, technology, and engineering. This laptop is an invaluable tool that will take learning to new horizons. Let's create innovators of the future with a new laptop!
