Last year our school did not pass the State tests and remains on probation. Considering 98% of our students come from poor families, with most living in homeless shelters and public housing where education is not the priority, it's understandable. Nonetheless, as a dedicated professional, I examined the situation and realized most kids were losing crucial points just from failing to pace themselves during the tests. I investigated possible solutions and came up with a great one: Time Trackers from Nasco! These are lava-lamp shaped contraptions that have three lights: green, yellow and red. The teacher sets the time and the Time Tracker lights up warning the kids how much time is left. I got a hold of one and used it in this year's tests, and the kids were able to pace themselves much better. As do most teachers, previously I simply used the clock on the wall. Kids being kids, many were not able to keep track of time as well (even in fifth grade, the big and little hands can be confusing when under stress!). With these new tools, the students were able to visualize the time left, and pace themselves appropriately. The result? Less incomplete questions and better scores! Simple, huh? Now all we need are more Time Trackers for the school. The kids in our school, predominantly African-American, are all very smart. Unfortunately they have not been given a fair shake in life and start out behind most other kids their age. They have the knowledge not only to pass but to succeed. They just need some extra tools to make up for the lack of books, computers, and nutrition in their homes. If you help us out with this project, you will make a drastic and immediate improvement in over 300 students' lives.
