Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth-grade teacher in the South Bronx. Our school is located in one of the ten poorest congressional districts in the United States. We serve three halfway houses for mothers recovering from drug use and several shelters. We are, in short, a very needy school. I would love to take my students on trips related to the fourth-grade social studies curriculum. Unfortunately, in struggling schools, social studies receives the least resources as the focus is on boosting math and reading scores. My class would truly benefit from the South Street Seaport Museum's New Amsterdam Walking Tour. They would learn what life was like for Manhattan's early settlers. Students would use primary resources to trace the development of Lower Manhattan from 1600 to the present. They would also visit New York Unearthed and view some of the artifacts that provide clues to the past. Students learn best when the activities we do are hands-on and engaging. Most of our students do not get opportunities to visit museums with their families. And like all children, they love being outside of the classroom once in a while. I want them to be able to take advantage of all the amazing resources New York City has to offer. Please help make this possible for this class of inner-city kids.
