Our school population consists of students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds with the majority being low-income; however, our students reflect a sense of pride and spirit towards our school.
Our students have had limited opportunities to experience activities many of us take for granted and they embrace each and every juncture with joy and enthusiasm.
Over 60% of our students come to middle school as "at-risk" readers. Looking at our male population, many have already written off the importance of reading for pleasure.
My Project
High interest literature is needed to captivate students and encourage them to read for enjoyment. Our students do not want to read because they have forgotten they can travel through time by reading a variety of books.
By reading "Shane" students are able to experience the challenges faced by early settlers as well as the importance of acceptance and forgiveness between strong male leads.
More importantly, "Shane" has a male as the main character exposing students to a strong male lead. Students are commonly required to read books that are more appealing to females. The captivating words, figurative language and mesmerizing plots will keep ALL students engaged.
