My Students

My classroom holds a buzz of activity and is focused on giving kids the opportunities that they may not get elsewhere.

My 5th-grade class is in a high-need, low-income public school. Each of the students in my class is a vibrant, excited learner who looks for the next opportunity to gain knowledge.

Each child in my classroom is a unique learner who comes to school each day ready to achieve at the highest levels. As a teacher, it is my job to encourage the students to explore paths that they show a marked interest in. I also see it as my job to show my students that learning can be magical.

My Project

In my classroom I use an approach called the CIA approach developed by Sarah Collinge. This approach allows students to learn about the patterns of books through whole group instruction, and book clubs. During the whole group lesson all students are able to access rich text as the teacher does the reading. Students stop periodically and discuss different topics such as the mood, author's message, and character traits that are inferred from words, actions, and feelings.

Never before in my 17 years of teaching have I had 5th graders beg me to keep reading.

These books will allow my students to continue their love of reading through book clubs and independent reading opportunities that tie into the books that we are reading as a whole class.
