Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's time to read! My students love to read and we have written grants to get books in their hands. Now our challenge is to build up their stamina so they can read lots and lots! But when I track the number of minutes they are reading at home, we aren't coming close to what we need.
My students are in 4th grade and we attend a large urban school in a large metropolitan city.
My students are mostly of Latino decent and English language learners. 98% of the students at my school come from families who are living below the poverty level. I have a terrific group of students. This is my second year with them (I taught them for 3rd grade) and I'm excited to see them continue to grow and blossom.
My Project
Something as simple as a timer would completely change my students' reading lives. I want them to keep track of the number of minutes they read at home, but asking a 9 year old to calculate that be tricky and inaccurate. I see students taking a timer home and having them keep track of the number of minutes they read every night. We already have a reading log where we write everything we read, so this is a natural extension. Then when I conference with each child weekly, we can set attainable goals so they can build up their stamina and push them to be stronger readers and life-long learners! My students need timers to track the amount of time they read, to make sure they are getting enough reading time at home.
Students who read more, learn more.
It just makes sense. The more you read, the better a reader you become. You can't become a star musician or sports player without practice. I want my students to get all the practice they can. Something as simple as a timer could help them track their reading, take responsibility for their learning and set goals for themselves. Ultimately, it will help them become smarter and that's what I'm fighting for.
