"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." Maya Angelou
I am a first grade teacher at a Title I school.
In first grade, developing a strong reading foundation is critical. My goal is to have a productive and functional literacy station for them to use independently. We do not have a literacy center that is able to meet their needs at this time.
I have twenty-four wonderful students who are a curious bunch and are all eager to explore and learn. My students love to dive into a good book. Students are learning how to make real-life connections to stories. They love finding new information in books or reading about certain scenarios that reminds them of something they can relate to in their personal lives.
My Project
My students need a functional listening center with headphones and read along quality books to help develop strong reading skills. My students will use the materials requested in a listening center. The listening center we currently have does not adequately meet student needs. It is difficult to use and requires a lot of "teacher assistance." Students are currently using an old tape player with two sets of books and a cassette tape. The cassette is constantly getting caught in the tape player. In order to continue to build reading skills and foster a love of reading, my students will be able to independently listen to different types of literature on compact disk that is easier to use and student friendly. Students will be actively engaged while I am able to work with reading groups. Students will be able to complete book reviews and answer comprehension questions to build comprehension skills. Students will also benefit from having books read to them by seeing the words on the page come alive in an expressive way. Students will hear good reading fluency and they will continue to develop good listening skills.
Donations to this project will make a difference by allowing my students to independently take charge of their reading experience.
Students will continue to strengthen reading/phonic skills and comprehension skills that are taught to them in first grade. Having a working literacy station to utilize will not only help build reading skills, it will also help build confidence in students reading abilities
