TIME to Read, 2nd Graders!

My students need engaging non-fiction texts that are grade level appropriate. TIME For Kids will allow my students to learn about current events each month.

My Students

Our school is a place to grow! That is the motto that motivates our teachers and students to put forth their best effort each and every day. My school is a Title I neighborhood school that has close ties to the surrounding community. We welcome students of many different backgrounds at our school and each day we work towards building a more culturally responsive community.

My students love to learn about the diverse world around them.

They are at an age where they are starting to form opinions and think more in depth about their world. Their positive spirits bring joy to the school community on a daily basis.

My Project

Through this project, I aim to foster an appreciation for news, the people, places, and events that shape our cultures. This past year, my second grade students used the TIME For Kids website to learn about current events at the end of the school day. We would discuss what we read and the importance of the articles.

Having experienced these rich conversations with my students, I realized that giving students the printed, monthly TIME For Kids magazines would enhance their engagement even more and could be a valuable supplemental resource that would enrich our reading lessons throughout the school year.

In the magazine, there are non-fiction readings that are created for second graders, at their appropriate reading and interest level. With these monthly magazines, each second grader will be able to be taught current events and non-fiction reading concepts such as using text features, understanding author's purpose, and distinguishing fact and opinion.

Having the TIME For Kids magazine as a resource will positively impact the entire second grade at my school by giving them a better understanding of the world around them, locally and globally.
