Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love exiting science projects that are hands on, so I try always to bring them these experiences. My students are also extremely interested in going into medicine fields. Many are juniors and seniors who are taking both Anatomy and Physiology AND AP Biology simultaneously. Their learning is truly most effective when they can do hands on projects that allow them to apply the concepts they have learned in class.
My students are from diverse backgrounds around the East Bay of the California Bay Area.
They are also from mostly low socio-economic backgrounds. Some students are first or second generation Americans and some will be the first in their first in their families to go to and complete college. The experiences they gain in Anatomy and Physiology could help shape their future scholastic and career goals!
My Project
The intention of this project is to give students hands on learning opportunities. Students will be able to dissect a sheep brain and do a mock heart surgery on a sheep heart. These projects will be a part of our unit on communication in the body and how power is used and generated in the body respectively. These dissections will be used as assessments and learning experiences to give students practical application of how these systems are put together and operate.
This project will bring the memorization of anatomical systems and their physiology to life through practical dissections and surgical techniques.
Students will complete both dissections, but will also learn suturing techniques that will aide them in moving into premed tracks in college. These techniques will also help them in some of the volunteer opportunities they are taking on at local hospitals and veterinary clinics.
