My students are a snapshot of the world, bringing experiences and backgrounds from all walks of life to our school. They are energetic and ready to engage in new activities.
I work at a Title I school in which 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
The students come from many cultures, and speak a variety of languages including English, Spanish, Hmong, Vietnamese, Chinese, Cambodian, Farsi, and Russian, to name a few. Many of them have very limited opportunities for life enrichment or a safe environment for play and competition. They are full of life and ready to learn and grow. They deserve every opportunity for fun, engaging activities that will help them to enjoy school and learn to cooperate and solve problems together.
My Project
Our students love to come to P.E. and learn new skills, as well as practice those they already know. We aim to provide them with a program that helps them learn about personal fitness and gives them the opportunity to engage in a variety of new sports. With about 1,000 students at our school, equipment starts to break down even with proper care. We also don't have any P.E. funds to buy any new equipment. Students have been asking me for 3 years to do a basketball unit, but not only do we not have any basketballs, we have no working air compressor to inflate them! Yoga mats will assist them when working on personal fitness, so that they do not have to do push-ups and curl-ups on the rough, dirty ground.
By helping us to purchase these supplies, you are helping students in a very large school broaden their experience and learn that movement and staying fit can be fun.
Many of these students would not otherwise have the opportunity to try many of our activities or learn about proper fitness and health. It is clear that in the two years we have had an organized Physical Education program that students have gained and improved skills and have made choices to improve their personal fitness.
It is exciting and inspiring to see students make and achieve goals, and to learn that they can do things they never knew they could! We need to raise our new generation to be healthy and strong!
