Time to Get Buzzy! Building Attending Skills in the Classroom!
Help me give my students tools to support their attention and focus on academics. This watch is a non-invasive tool to help students learn to monitor themselves and build independence without the embarrassment of teacher reminders.
My students are polite, friendly, caring, and hardworking. They come to school every day ready to learn and challenge themselves. They give me a reason to want to do better and work hard so that they can learn and be the best version of themselves. I am a school social worker in a building of 400 students. Of those 400 students, 46% are low income, 27% of our students are English learners, and 17% of our students have IEPs.
My students are so eager to learn and want to do well despite the social, environmental, and economic challenges they face every day.
I see them at their best and I see them at their worst. We celebrate progress and growth and we problem solve ways to grow and improve academically, socially, and emotionally. Every day is a new adventure in learning.
My Project
Sometimes things that are out of a student's control, like their home environment and health, impact their ability to fully attend and engage which limits their learning and the learning of others.
Not all students learn the same way.
Some require a little extra support to be able to attend, stay on task, and focus. Inattention negatively impacts student’s academic performance, that poor performance impacts their self-image which then continues the cycle by impacting the student socially and academically.
With the help of the time-timer watch, student's can receive customized alerts to remind them to focus, check their work, or take a break. Because the watch has vibration features, the reminder does not impact the learning of other students. Student's will be able to build independence and self-monitor without the embarrassment of verbal reminders from adults or bulky visual reminders on their desk.
Student's who have been identified as having the highest need will be able to check-out their watch daily and return it at the end of the day so that it does not get lost. Also, the watches have the ability to be recharged. The daily check-in and check-out will also allow for reflection on how their day went, what worked well, and areas to improve.
The hope is that with less interruption to the learning environment, students wearing the watch will be able to become more focused and on-task so that they are more available for learning to build academic success and self-esteem. It would also help to reduce the number of distractions and interruptions in the whole classroom.
