Sitting still and paying attention does not come easy to everyone. However, when you think of a school environment, learning requires attention!
We are a pretty small school located in a very caring and involved community.
As a school counselors, I work with students one-on-one, in a small group setting, and also as whole classes. We are a school with a moderate level of poverty. Many of our students need extra help developing their ability to focus and attend in order to learn.
My Project
The resources I am requesting will be available to all of our students and will be used in all settings (one-on-one, small group and whole classroom). I would like to use the CD player and the Mozart CD in my small groups along with balance balls. The watches on the wish list have a vibrating function that would help student redirect their attention when they are off task. We also have a lot of students that like to fidget in their desks, so we plan to tape Velcro strips under their desks to meet that sensory need. I am also excited to see what kids will think of the chew bracelets, necklaces and pencil toppers. All of these tools will not only meet the kids' sensory needs and activity levels, they will also help our students develop better self regulation skills.
As teachers and counselors, we put accommodations in place to help our students attend in school.
With this assistance, most students figure out how to compensate and improve their skills. However, there are many students that need additional supports to not just compensate for the attention deficits, but also to develop their ability to attend and focus.
