My students are bright, creative young adults who are beginning to think about their lives beyond the high school. All AP and Honors students, they are leaders, editors, artists, star athletes, theater and music standouts. These are students who can accomplish a lot during the eighty-minute class periods, especially when they are at ease.
When I added flexible seating last year, my junior and senior ELA students responded with enthusiasm.
Many began arriving early to choose a favorite seat or table.
Unfortunately, the secondhand furniture was no match for active students, and soon the wooden chairs were more appropriate for kindling than student seating. The stability balls roll. Getting from one end of the room to the other requires a map in the full classes, where bulky chairs inhibit walking routes.
My Project
The sleek office-style chairs, wobble seats, and rings to anchor stability balls will enable students to move around the room more easily. I can get rid of the chairs that have not aged well.
With furniture that is built for teens in classrooms, students will be more productive and comfortable.
Thanks to flexible seating, they can collaborate at tables and in comfortable chairs; this is a great improvment over shoving big, blocky desks together during group time or sitting in rows.
I want to make this room work better for these upperclassmen who are preparing for their futures and for the students who come after them. They all deserve to have furniture that is functional and inviting.
