Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Bulldog Band is made up of thirty students grades 7-12, and they have had quite a year. The band received a First Division at UIL Marching Contest for the first time in 15 years and is working towards their first UIL Sweepstakes Award for the first time in 16 years in March of 2015.
The Bulldog Band program is made up of two groups, 6th grade beginning band and the high school band grades 7-12.
The school provides all band instruments, as well as supplies such as reeds and valve oil to all students involved in the band program at no cost to the students. Most of our students could not afford to be in band if this policy was not in place. Providing all instruments and supplies puts quite a strain on our limited school budget and at times, materials we need just have to wait.
Despite the limited resources, the Bulldog Band is successful and does their best with what they have. The students have creative ways to help make things work and even give love offerings whenever they do get something from the supply cabinet. The band is made up of a group of students who truly love making music and work extremely hard every day despite their circumstances.
My Project
My students that play brass instruments will use these materials to maintain their instruments. The bulk of these materials is valve, slide, and rotor oil which keeps the valves on trumpets, baritones, and tubas as well as the slide and rotors on trombones and French horns moving properly. Think of it like oil for your car's engine pistons.
Also requested are spitballs which are used to clean out the gunk that collects inside the tubing of brass instruments. Blowing them through the brass instruments is also quite entertaining for both students and teachers.
The final item is mouthpiece sanitizer. During the winter months the band goes through quite a lot of sanitizer. The spray is used on the mouthpiece to prevent the spread of germs from day to day.
This project will help ease the strain on the band's supply budget and help prolong the lives of the instruments in our inventory.
The spit balls will allow us to clean the instruments out and a have a little bit of fun and the mouthpiece sanitizer will help us all stay healthy during the school year. Your contributions will help these kids continue to make beautiful music for years to come.
