Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a group of fourth grade bilingual students in North Bergen, NJ. We come from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador and Ecuador. We love to learn about the American culture and reading a magazine in English would be a great asset to us. We also love to read and act out plays. This helps us with our English reading and oral presentation skills. We would really appreciate any help to make our transition to America a bit more enjoyable!
My Project
The Time magazines will be used by the students every day during Center time. This is when they break down into groups depending on English language level. They will carefully read and analyze the Articles and look for things such as the main idea or theme. They will use the magazine articles as springboards to do research projects and look for Spanish-English cognates. The magazines will open their horizons to new places and things they've never heard about. The plays will be a fun way for them to practice their English oral skills in a non-pressure environment. By taking on a character they will no longer feel embarrassed to be speaking English out loud.
