During science lessons and the Non-Fiction unit of study in literature, my classroom often seems to be lacking in resources for student research. While trying to encourage my students to hunt for facts about their subject of interest they run out of options very quickly. What better way to supplement our non-fiction library than with weekly magazines filled with pictures and facts about subjects that interest students? Parents will be brought in on the excitement and encouraged to go through the magazine with their child at home. Students will look forward to the arrival each week of a new issue and be inspired to learn to read as quickly as they can. Not to mention all the oral language development that will take place during discussions of the magazine. Each of the 25 children in my class will receive 30 magazines by the end of the year. How tempting the magazine stack will look compared to the same old TV shows!
