Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher to 28 hardworking children in the Bronx. Everyday one of our morning routines is to discuss current events. On the first couple of days of school, the students didn't really understand current events. Now only two weeks into the year they look foward to current events. They see how current events are important, interesting and relates to their lives. Unfortunately when I give current events assignments every Friday they have to ask their parents for help in looking for an article to cut out of the newspaper. The newspapers are too difficult for children in second grade to read on their own. It is for this reason that I would like a class set of Time magazine for my class.
In the beginning of the year one of the things that I requested from parents was $4.50 for Time magazine for kids. Unfortunately, only one parent has sent the money thus far. The magazines are great. They always have interesting subject matter. I know my students would benefit from the magazines. They have interesting real world topics and themes that would motivate students to read. Additionally, students would get familiar with reading nonfiction text. The magazine also helps children with their reading and writing skills. Lastly, the magazine topics can be used to integrate social studies and science into our second grade curriculum.
