My students need materials including an elapsed time clock, several time games and activities, and a book about telling time to help them understand time.
It's time for my students to master the concept of time. Being able to tell time and calculate elapsed time is an essential life skill. Many students are so used to living in the digital world that telling time using a clock face is a foreign concept to them.
I teach in a small rural school in Oregon where a significant portion of the students qualify for free or reduced price meals.
About one third of the students in my school are English Language Learners. My students learn best through hands-on activities and experiences that bring abstract concepts to life.
My Project
Using worksheets to help students learn to tell time can be dull and boring, and calculating elapsed time can be challenging for students. The elapsed time clock allows students to actually move the hands to calculate time, and then they can open display windows to check whether their calculations are accurate. Colorful clock puzzles help students match clock puzzle pieces to digital times printed inside the tray. Both games help students learn to calculate elapsed time in an entertaining setting. As students face real life situations where they need to understand and apply the concepts of time, the skills they acquire through hands-on practice will help them develop mastery.
Everyone needs to be able to tell time accurately, and to calculate elapsed time correctly.
These skills are essential in everyday life. Digital clocks are not always available, and students must understand the concept of elapsed time to find solutions to real life problems. These time-related resources will enhance our math curriculum and convince students that learning about time can be great fun! Please don't let time run out--donate now! :)
