Our school district continues to face devastating budget cuts; nearly fifty percent of our families are enrolled in the free or reduced-price lunch program at our school. We don't quite qualify for any extra money from the government. There is little funding available for any new materials for our students. Our school is over forty years old and few updates have been made. The school building was meant for around three hundred students, but we have over four hundred.
We have a large number of English Language Learners, including native speakers of Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Arabic, Dutch, Korean, Hmong, Chuukese, Japanese, Mandarin, and other languages, as well as immigrant students.
Over forty languages are spoken in our district!
My Project
My students need seven sand timers to help them master their basic math skills. Each student in my classroom will utilize one of these timers throughout the week. Because they are highly visual, these timers remind students to focus on their math practice, and give a visual cue to race the sand!
After time away from school due to the pandemic, students need engaging tools to help them build time-management skills.
The three visual timers that can adjust for specific students' needs will be helpful for students to increase their focus. These can be utilized by individual students to keep right on their desk as a reminder to complete their work quickly so they don't fall behind or get distracted.
