Like many students from big cities, my students come from diverse backgrounds, and many of them face daily challenges both in and out of the classroom. My goal is to provide my students with an innovative, inviting classroom environment where wonderful learning can occur despite the obstacles they are currently facing.
Recently, without warning, our beloved school was shut down because of mold issues and other building concerns.
As a result, we've been relocated indefinitely, to a local office building that has been renovated to house all 700 students. We are extremely grateful that we were able to remain together as a school in this new space. Sadly, all of us had to leave our belongings, both personal and academic, behind because of concerns of cross contamination in our new space. While our district has done a fine job providing us with essential supplies, there are many, many items my students are still in need of.
My Project
For most of my students, school is the only place where they have access to computers and the internet. Without a doubt, technology opens up a whole new world to students who otherwise may not have an opportunity to discover the world outside their own immediate environment.
Having iPads available to my students lends itself to limitless possibilities.
In my class, my students learn best in both whole group and small group instruction. I'd like to create a small-group technology station within my classroom, with the iPads and sit and stand table so the students can work independently. This station would be used daily in all subjects, including reading, math, science, social studies and writing. There's no question that these materials will make a difference to my students' learning.
