We are a Title I school, which has many students facing economic hardships at home, and the accompanying challenges impact their education. All students are provided a breakfast and lunch at no cost, and we partner with local community organizations to help ensure all students have the supplies needed to be productive. Regardless of the outside pressures my students face, they come to class eager to learn.
My class is filled with high energy students, with a strong desire to learn.
My Project
My project supports two separate but important skills too many kids need to work on: counting money and understanding complex stories. To achieve this I need play money and graphic novels. Counting money is a skill that was once a part of many games children played. Children still use money in games but digitization has changed the focus from the process of accumulating money, which includes exchanging money and counting, to an end total focus in which money is counted automatically and the focus is acquisition. Children tend to enjoy exchanging money and since it is an important skill it is a double win for students at school. Reading is also challenge for many students. Some students want to read complex stories but do not yet have the needed vocabulary or decoding skills. Graphic novels give students the opportunity to follow stories that their specific reading abilities would otherwise prevent them from enjoying.
