My Students

Our school is made up of 400 kindergarten through 4th grade students in a rural Wisconsin school district. They face many struggles, including language barriers, socio-economic factors, and a litany of difficult home lives, but they are tenacious and are willing to face any challenge. As a school district, we have limited resources, but do all that we can with what we have in order to meet the academic, social, behavioral, and emotional needs of our students. In all things, the students come first!

My Project

Time for Kids is a magazine subscription that exposes students to rich vocabulary, current world issues, and poses multiple view points for them to explore, thus bringing about rich discussion and critical thinking skills when utilized in the classroom, be it for whole group discussion or with small groups. Literacy development is a major focus of our school district, as it is with every district across our great nation, but one barrier we face has been the quality and quantity of reading materials available for students at home. Having a magazine that they can call their own and take home with them is something that makes this project even more imperative.
