Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade bilingual students. We are a large urban school with over 500 students, 95% of whom are of Hispanic origin. Our students' parents have come to the United States to make a better life for their families. We are a neighborhood school in a Hispanic community. The neighborhood thrives with working families, local restaurants, shops, and service centers. It is a bustling but conservative area. The neighborhood streets are alive with remodeled homes in warm southwestern colors and textures.
On December 26, 2007, our school sustained substantial damage due to an accidental fire. Every book, pencil, piece of paper, computer, desk and chair were destroyed by the fire or suffered smoke damage to the point of being unusable.
We have tried to rebuild our school and classroom libraries with quality books that will help the children gain valuable vocabulary and comprehension skills.
With the ever-changing world, it is important for students to read about world events and people involved of interest. Time for Kids provides them with this need. My students are bilingual and do not watch the news or read newspapers at home. Their parents are limited English speakers and many do not have command of the language. Fathers work long hours and watch Spanish television when given the time.
Your generosity will provide my students with a new view to the world. This information will promote discussions and understanding of people living in other lands and events that occur in our country. Children's lives still center around their family and its customs and Time for Kids will expand their knowledge and understanding of a much bigger world.
TIME For Kids Magazine- World Report Edition w/ TFK Around the World (grades 4-6). Pricing is valid for orders placed after March 2008. After August 15th of current school year, pricing will remain in effect but TIME For Kids reserves the right to prorate issue quantity and free gifts. Only valid for orders in quantities of 10 or more. Orders for less than 10 subscriptions will NOT be fulfilled.
