I would like a subscription to TIME For Kids.
I feel this is a wonderful resource for keeping children up to date on the activities happening in the world around them.
I currently teach 4th grade at a rural school in Pender County, North Carolina. I teach 3 blocks of reading and 1 block of writing daily. Many of my children live in single family households, and many are on free or reduced lunch. Thirty percent of my students are ELL (English Language Learners). I feel that the majority of my students do not have the opportunities that many others have.
I would like to purchase a subscription to TIME For Kids. I feel this would be an excellent source of non-fiction reading. The stories are a great way to teach comprehension and encourage critical thinking skills. It would also be a good source for character building skills as they read about people from all over the world and how they deal with the positive and negative events of their lives.
Since I teach three classes I would like for each child to be able to keep their copy. I would like to have them assemble their copies into a world events book that they can keep as their own personal "Year In Review" when they leave 4th Grade.
I was suprised when I showed the children the sample copy. I could not believe that most of the children have never had the opportunity of using a resource like TIME For Kids. Most of the class don't even receive a newspaper at home. When I have tried to talk about events that are happening around the world, they have no knowledge.
I feel this would be a wonderful resource for my children. As they explore the world around them, they will learn and enjoy reading stories about people from other parts of the world as well as in their own country.
