In our class there are 24 students that bring their own background knowledge and ideas to our room. They range in reading level from below grade level to well above, but they are all similar in their love for learning.
My students are from a diverse and multi-cultural background.
We are a new charter school and are working on preparing our students to be enthusiastic and energetic learners. The kids have a love for math and science, and are eager to learn more about the world around them and how they fit into it. While they are excited to learn, many are reluctant writers. Giving them a real "magazine" to read with interesting facts and articles will spark their motivation to share their findings with others via writing.
My Project
Our school is a new charter, and doesn't have a school library. I have worked to build up my classroom library, but don't have the most recent non-fiction text. We will use the subscription to TIME For Kids to discuss real life occurrences and meet Common Core Standards for reading and discussing nonfiction text. These lessons include engaging activities that we can use on our SMARTboard, as well as putting an issue into each students' hands. They can discuss what they learn with others and their family, and will gain lifelong skills of discussing world events. They will get a total of 28 issues throughout the school year, which will provide them with tons of extra practice.
Being able to provide each child with a subscription to TIME For Kids will motivate them to read independently and have discussions about current events.
With them having the opportunities to discuss, read, and write about the world around them will increase efficiency in all subject areas.
