Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Adora Svitak once said, "By bringing current events into the class and daily discussion, maybe we won't need to wait for our grandchildren's questions to remind us we should have paid more attention to current events." Students at my school need to read engaging magazines to know current events.

Students at my school are curious, eager to learn, and appreciative of all that we have to teach them.

Students at my school make the best of the cards that they were dealt to them and look for ways to build their path to a better future through their own education. Most come from low income families, have experienced trauma in their short lives, and all receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Our school is a safe place where students can come to learn, be nurtured, be challenged, and exposed to the arts.

My Project

We have very little materials available to us to teach social studies meaningfully and effectively. The fourth and fifth grade teachers at my school (5 total teachers) are looking to enhance our existing curricula and use "TIME for Kids" to teach students about what is going on in the world around them. We find that we often get bogged down teaching only the standards and know that this isn't enough for our students. We would like the opportunity to teach students both their grade level standards and current events which would make for a comprehensive and exciting curriculum for students.

Donations to this project will improve five different classrooms by allowing students access to high interest reading materials on current events.

Students will be able to increase their knowledge of the world around them, reading abilities, and TIME For Kids will become a common theme students can talk about amongst grade levels.
