This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The wonderful students of my class come from a very high poverty area where most of the 30 students in my class are on free or reduced priced lunch. Most of the students are bilingual and don’t start speaking English until they begin kindergarten. The students face many difficulties outside of school that is out of their control. However, despite all of their hardships and struggles they come to school everyday with a smile on their face, positive attitude and happy, and ready to learn!

My Project

Time for Kids is a classroom magazine that makes information about current events accessible to kids. I teach 4th grade students, were many are second language learners. Many are reading below grade level and are starting to become disinterested in reading because of their struggles. I have found that using classroom magazines help reluctant readers enjoy reading. They look forward to reading the magazines and are engaged in the reading.

Time for Kids provides age appropriate current event articles to students in an engaging and exciting way.

The magazines provide ample opportunities for students to work on their nonfiction text reading skills and allows students to engage in great classroom discussions. Both of these activities help develop students’ language. Your donation to my project will go far to help my students to begin to enjoy reading and develop their language!
