My Students

My students have a wide range of interests and abilities, as we all do. Learning, however, and especially reading does not come easy for them. They are not going to earn a high school diploma because of their disabilities. They read and comprehend several grade levels below where they should be as young adults. My students are in a Young Adult Transition Program and are between the ages of 18 and 21. My goal is to give them all the skills and strategies they need to be successful on the job and in their daily lives; so with that entails becoming better readers! They need high interest text that is current and relevant to their everyday lives.

My Project

TIME For Kids is a high-interest, current events reading material that my students can hold! I want them to see the color, feel the paper, and turn the pages. So much is lost when reading digital text. They have difficulty tracking the words on the page and aren't able to turn back to locate information.

This reading subscription will allow my students to apply the strategies that I am teaching them and will make reading fun again in this magazine format!

These materials will engage students to be readers, will allow for meaningful discussion, and can extend into purposeful writing.

The stories are age-appropriate and on a reading level that my students can read and comprehend! The information explains the world around them using their language. TIME News is high-quality, trusted journalism that teaches news literacy. Instructional materials are aligned to Common Core and state standards.
