My students need a personal copy of TIME For Kids Magazine to improve their current events knowledge/social studies content with kid friendly language.
A typical day in my classroom consists of reading, writing, math, science, and vocabulary. One of my major goals is to immerse my students with more history knowledge and current events on a weekly basis. The biggest challenge is locating resources available to use with instruction.
I am currently teaching in a low income school in NYC.
My class consists of 30 students of mixed population and mixed gender. They are predominately considered a gifted class performing at either a level 3 or 4 based on 5th grade level standards. My students are constantly looking to gain more knowledge any way they can. They have a drive and enthusiasm for learning I have never encountered before out my 7 years of teaching.
My Project
My students will be given the opportunity to learn history and current events on a weekly basis through the subscription of TIME For Kids Magazine. They will be able to practice reading informational texts, summarizing, inferring, comprehension of graphics, forming opinions on topics etc. My hope is that they will be better informed on events occurring around the world and have opinions leading to engaging discussions.
This project will improve my class by giving them the background knowledge they need in regards to history and current events.
The articles will give them a variety of genres to read. The topics will provide them with knowledge of world events and the ability hold debates over their opinions on the topics.
