My fourth graders want to be winners in life. They are determined to beat the odds stacked up against them! They are students at a high needs K-5 school in North Philadelphia. With 100% free breakfast and lunch, my students deserve a quality education. Many students have experienced setbacks and trauma but need to feel as if their life matters. They need to know that when they walk into my classroom that it is a safe, nurturing, and loving environment. It is a special place for them to learn and receive an excellent education.
Reading is important! Even kids know this! I actually had a student ask me how does someone get to 9th grade without being able to read? I've heard of this sad situation happening to high school graduates and want to prevent this from happening to any of my students. Some are behind for sure but we are working at it! One way to get readers excited is to bring different types of books and reading materials into the classroom. Access to interesting topics and stories is what Time For Kids will provide my students on a weekly basis. I want every student in my class at their independent reading level to love and excel in the knowledge from the books they read in class. Time for Kids is an excellent magazine that provides insight on various, relevant topics that will grab their attention to persuade, inform and entertain my fabulous fourth graders. I've used TFK in the past and it truly helps to boost independent reading, increase interest and reading stamina.
