Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher at a severly under-funded school in East New York, Brooklyn. My students are struggling to bring their reading skills up to and beyond grade level, but do not have access to materials that would help them reach this goal. It is essential that they bridge the gap in their reading this year, because next year they will enter middle school, where classes are much larger and the workload is far more strenuous.
I would like to give my students the opportunity to improve their reading skills while learning about important current events, scientific discoveries, and fascinating places around the world. "Time for Kids" magazine makes that possible. The "World Report Editor" of Time for Kids targets students in grades 4-7. Every issue offers high interest stories about world news and fun activities to test readers' comprehension. This magazine gives students access to current information written at a level they can read.
The majority of reading in life outside school is nonfiction (e.g. newspapers, store advertisements, directions, etc). Yet in school students have access to very little quality nonfiction texts. A subscription to "Time for Kids" for each child in my class will help them develop the skills needed for the fluent reading of nonfiction texts. Please help me bring this terrific resource to my students.
