At the end of the school year I want my students to be ready for 4th grade, but more importantly I want my students to be proud of themselves and feel successful. The challenge with this is that most of my students come into 3rd grade way below grade level which makes learning challenging for them.
I have a vivacious group of 25 third graders.
They come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Among my students, at least 4 languages other than English are spoken in their homes. Even with the occurring struggle of understanding English in school, these students come excited to learn something every day. School is a safe place for a lot of my students, where structure, discipline, and love are appreciated more often than not. Our school is a Title I school with 96% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. At our school, our motto is Climb to College; we encourage students that every action they make effects their path to success, eventually leading to college if they choose. These students don't have a lot at home so while they are at school, it's my goal to provide them with the best education possible. With donations like these, our students are that much closer to climbing to college.
My Project
Students will benefit from reading the Time for Kids magazine in many ways. One, will be getting them curious about and engaged in real world current events. Another way my students will use the magazines is by practicing their comprehension of non-fiction text. So often, my students are only drawn to fiction books. I want them to know that so much is happening in the world that they can read about.
Having Time for Kids magazines for my students will open their eyes to current events happening all around the world.
The engaging text will capture their interest in more ways than they could even imagine. Some of my students have never been outside of our city limits; TFK will allow their imaginations to soar!
