Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our mission for our classroom is to help create world citizens. In order to do this well, our students need to be exposed to news and current events that is happening both in their backyard, as well as in areas of the world that are less familiar.
Our students are primarily of low-income and English language learners.
They are lovers of learning. They enjoy hands-on discovery and experiences. They are passionate about exploring topics of interest (e.g. sports, music, media) and enjoy finding connections between their world and their interests and the world around them.
My Project
As an enrichment to our social studies unit, we are asking for Time for Kids magazines to allow students to explore current events and make comparisons to life as we see it to what we are learning in the past. As a part of our social studies unit, students will be asked about current events, people who are changing the world, inventions that are created to make the world a better place and then students will be encouraged to "go out" and do likewise. We want to create students who are passionate about the world around them. In order to do this, they must first understand the issues that exist and the people who are working together to make a difference. Our vision for our students is to help them find a passion in learning through real-life texts and encourage them to find a dream to make a difference in our world.
This donation will greatly improve our classroom as it offers yet another medium for our students to explore.
It allows students to gather information in a text format and keeps our conversations up-to-date with the issues that arise in our world. It also allows students the chance to be critical thinkers of how issues are being addressed and discuss what they would do similarly or differently.
