I teach Academic Intervention Services to students in our rural elementary school in upstate New York. Our school has a student population of 350 students in grades K-5 and many qualify for reading intervention services daily. These students are at risk of not meeting grade-level expectations are recommended to receive Academic Intervention Services.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, with a large percentage of economically disadvantaged students.
Many of the students at our school qualify for free and reduced lunch, health and mental health services through community partnerships and our school's weekly backpack program which includes food for students and their families. A percentage of our students and families also struggle to maintain housing and are considered homeless within our district.
My students are eager, young, innovative, and compassionate learners who work hard on a daily basis. Our students are both sympathetic and empathetic to classmates creating a safe and loving learning environment.
My Project
Time for Kids is a wonderful resource that we usually use in the classroom. This year, we are 100% virtual and my first grade students miss having this resource available to them.
Time for Kids is engaging, focuses on current topics and provides valuable resources for the classroom.
These materials will make a difference in my student's learning because they enjoy learning about current events. Time for Kids is a great way to integrate social studies into their daily activities. I love how each issue builds on and develops new reading skills and teaches students to become informed citizens focusing on world events at their age level.
