This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach the third grade in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. I teach all academic subjects to my students. My students must be aware of the current events that are occurring throughout the world, as well as here in America.
I have been using the "Time For Kids News" and the "Go Places" magazines in my class for the past three years. These magazines are specifically designed for children. Students can keep up with the weekly current events by reading these magazines on a weekly basis. They can also find out about other places, and cultures in the "Go Places with TFK" magazine.
I have been asking the parents of my students to send money for the subscription. However, this is sometimes too costly in addition to the other school supplies that their children need. So often, I have paid for several of my students' subscriptions because their parents could not afford to pay for them.
This year I have 23 students in my class. I would like for them to be able to use these magazines in our classroom so that they could be well aware of the happenings in the world around them. Also, the third grade curriculum that we use is called "Communities Around The World". The "Go Places with TFK" magazine is an additional added attraction that supports what we are already studying. This year we will study three of the communities around the world, such as Puerto Rico, China, and Ghana, West Africa. The students will be able to read about children from China in the "Go Places" magazine and about their lives in present day China. These magazines are very colorful, and each student gets to have his own copy in hand to read and to keep. Furthermore, we do not have textbooks that are up-to-date that highlight the communities that we study. The "Go Places with TFK" magazine is an extra additional source of information for the students.
