My students need 10 subscriptions each to TIME for Kids, DynaMath, and SuperScience magazines, as well as Hot Dots pens (with practice cards) for improving student reading comprehension and math skills.
"Reading without reflecting is like eating without digesting" a quote by Edmund Duke. Unfortunately, not all of my students know how to reflect or comprehend the written word. My goal is for my students to gain a love of reading and an ability to understand the written word.
My students live in a high crime, high poverty area.
The population of the school is diverse with a high emphasis of Hispanic and African American students. It is evident that the majority of students do not have a background where reading is prevalent in the home. The focus of our school is in the growth of readers and life-long learners. I work with several groups of learners in different grade levels (3-5) and varying reading abilities within each group.
My Project
One of the resources requested for the classroom is the magazine Time for Kids. This magazine will update the students on current events here and around the world. DynaMath, another magazine I chose for my students, establishes the fact that math is a part of everyday life and does not disappear when students leave the classroom. The final magazine is SuperScience which focuses on the sciences and is set for varying reading levels. Each of the magazines engage core standards required by the state of Indiana. Along with the magazines, I have requested "Hot Dot" pens and the reading comprehension and math review cards to go with the pens. I look forward to the students being able to work individually with the pens and cards while being able to immediately check their learning.
This project will benefit my students by putting a variety of magazines with varying topics in their hands to read and discuss.
Students will enjoy the interactive practice they receive while using the "Hot Dot" pens on the math review and reading comprehension questions.
