My students need to be exposed to different foods, so we cook in the classroom, but it is difficult to store the ingredients without a refrigerator in our classroom.

"What is a salad?" This is a question I have heard from one of my students. Many of my students are not exposed to different foods. They eat fast food or frozen meals for dinner every night.
I am an autistic support teacher in an urban school in Pennsylvania.
I have seven students in my class this year. Each day is a new challenge for the students and for me. A few of my students are very picky eaters. They prefer to say, "I don't like it," instead of trying new foods. I do not force the students to try new foods, but I do encourage it.
If we had a refrigerator in the classroom, it would be very convenient to keep all the perishable items. Each week, I have to bring in the ingredients because I have no where to store them for a long period of time. This can become costly for me. My students look forward to cooking all week. Even if they do not like the final product, they still enjoy the process. Teaching my students to cook is a life skill that incorporates fractions, reading of the recipe, taking turns, and following directions. It also allows my students to use the skills they learned in the classroom at home.
It breaks my heart to hear my students say they ate pizza or McDonald's every night for dinner.
I want to help broaden their horizons by exposing them to new food. The refrigerator would make a huge difference on what foods we could cook.
