All of my students come from families that battle the struggles of poverty, trauma, living in the shelter system or projects, in a neighborhood where gunfire is a daily occurrence. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational carriers before entering my classroom. Having looped with most of my students has been a blessing because I truly get to know their needs and cater learning to meet their individual needs.
In a community plagued by violence and poverty, students should have the comfort knowing that school is a safe place where they can get their needs met.
One way I ensure that my students' needs are met is by creating sensory diets. A sensory diet does not mean food. It means filling your body with more sensory input to feed your 7 senses, the five senses we all know and the two in our bodies know as proprioceptic and vestibular. Ensuring that a child's sensory needs are met is extremely important. Without proper self-regulation, students can't be at their best and focus on learning.
My Project
For my students, school is their second home. A place where they depend n getting their next meal. However, so many of my students arrive late and need to eat in the classroom. I firmly believe if you don't eat, you can't learn. However, keeping our classroom clean can also be a challenge. I aim to teach my students responsibility. If you make a mess, you clean a mess. Our dustpan got thrown away earlier in the year accidentally by the custodians. I think it is time to upgrade to dust buster. This way kids can eat and rodents will stay away!
Also, we are getting tired of our CD player skipping and/or not working when we want it to.
We are in desperate need for a technology upgrade because we like to use music during transitions, project-based learning, arts and crafts, and even just to move around.
