I work at a K-8 school in a rural county in Florida. Over 80% of the students in our county come from low-income families which makes us a Title I county. Unfortunately, on October 10th, our community was hit hard by Hurricane Michael. Many homes were either damaged or destroyed. Some students were displaced from the hurricane and/or lost everything that belonged to them. It has put a huge financial strain on many residents in our community.
There are so many things that make my students so special.
We are from a small town and it feels like we are all family! My students love to read and I love to teach reading. I am a 3rd generation teacher so it runs through my blood. As a teacher, there are many times when school supplies, craft materials, daily snacks, or pizza parties come out of my own pocket. These children are amazing students and deserve the best education possible!
My Project
This technology will help the students in the classroom learn about technology, health and fitness, and wellness. Having an iPad in the classroom Improves academic performance. It increases student engagement and motivation. The Apple Watch is another incentive, but tool that students can use in the classroom. The Apple watch with a timer function will be effective in lessons. I can use the digital crown to set the time for activities– this is a strategy I often use to keep students on task but having the timer on my wrist will be very useful. The Apple watch has an APP that we use for daily behavior management. This will allow me to award points while walking around in the classroom as opposed to pulling the App up on an overhead projector. I think it is important for the students to see the latest technology in the classroom and see it being used. They will be able to use the watch, in a center, as a technology station with timed activities. This will allow them to use the various functions of the watch. These kids are great!
