Time and Track Our Athletes' Sprint to the Finish!
Help me give my students a precise time and photo finish as they compete on our brand new track. This fully automated timing (FAT) system includes a camera, software, hardware, tripod, carrying case, warranty and technical support.
My home school is quite rural, in a community built from legacy mining and agriculture. Due to my school not having a track, we have partnered with another local school for the past 10 years, creating a co-op program for track. Our host school is 17 miles away, so our athletes have to drive an hour on their own means just to make it to practice and back. Regardless, our participation continues to increase.
Last year, our host school board approved the construction of a brand new all weather track, leveling us up to the 'modern era' of competitive track while ending the era of our 20 year old cinder track (and no track before that).
This was a huge investment in our athletes, our athletic programs, and in our combined community. Now we can host more meets, offer more diverse events and opportunities, and provide an impact friendly surface on which our community members can exercise.
My Project
Although we have a brand new track, we still need one more item to host competitive meets and invitationals: a photo timing system. A Fully Automatic Timing (FAT) system is a popular type of sports timing system that captures digital race results accurate from at least 1/100th of a second to 1/1000th of a second. A FAT system can also create a timestamped, highly precise photo-finish line image, so we can decipher who crossed the line 'by a hair'.
In final sprints where fractions of seconds or centimeters count when crossing the finish line, no other timing system will suffice.
