Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am the art teacher at W.L. Greene Alternative School in Nashville, North Carolina. We have an extremely high percentage of students from low-income homes. It is essential that I make every effort to give my students new cultural experiences in art. I teach my Art I students the history of Byzantine and Roman art. I would enjoy giving them the hands-on experience of mosaic art. I want them to understand the hard work that went into the rich history of Byzantine and Roman mosaic pieces. By allowing my students a chance to draw out their own mosaic project and actually tile it would be an experience that they would never forget. I would have my students study the designs created by Byzantine and Roman mosaic artists and teach them about the emphasis they placed on nature, such as leaf shapes and waves from the ocean.I would then ask my students to look at their own environment for inspiration for their tile mosaic designs. Students could take their designs home and hang them on their wall as a reminder of the gift Roman and Byzantine artists gave us today. I would like to request enough mosaic tile, tile grout, and tile adhesive for 15 students to create their unique mosaic projects.
