Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, help is desperately needed. This provides an opportunity for my English/Reading students to lend a helping hand. My students are high school freshmen from the south side of Chicago. Though 95% of my students are categorized as low-income, I think it is very important they understand that they can do something. Many of my students currently, or have been in the past, recipients of peoples generosity; now it is their turn to help others. I think this will be a positive experience in that their eyes will be opened to the world around them and they will realize there are people out there worse off than them. I believe this will empower my students so that in the future they will think about the lives of others, sparking in them a lifelong desire to aid those less fortunate then themselves. I know that in the wake of any disaster many of us think "What can I do?", well, this project will answer that question for my students. Now and in the future, they will know that there is ALWAYS something that can be done! Please consider funding this proposal, so that English students at Tilden can help students and schools, devastated by Hurricane Katrina, get back to normality. In addition to the school supplies on this list, I will also hold a school supply drive in my classes so that students can add to the package. Thank you for your consideration!
