Help me give my students high-interest graphic novels in manga format are sought after in our middle school library. We can't keep them on the shelves!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the new school library media specialist at a middle school in Atlanta, GA. My school serves over 900 students who come from a variety of backgrounds; our school is a Title I institution with a high poverty percentage. Our school is also a Distinguished Status Positive Behavior Intervention School (PBIS).
Economic status should not affect students' opportunities for equitable education.
My scholars are committed to learning and succeeding and their media center needs to be a welcoming space that encourages literacy, collaboration, and critical thinking.
My Project
My scholars are burgeoning readers and manga and graphic novel books are their favorite! Japanese comics or manga supports reading comprehension, critical thinking, and sequencing skills.
Manga is the perfect way for students to gain reading competence and confidence to build their skills.
The layout of these books is great for understanding plot and character development. Student choice and a diverse collection are integral to establishing a culture of reading. Help our young readers continue to grow!
This manga collection will not only support students who attend our weekly lunch Anime Club but all students who are interested in exploring graphic novels and Japanese culture.
