This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I will be teaching fourth grade this year and am eager to start a book club with the students in my class. My idea is to read a chapter each week and have a lunchtime book club meeting every other Friday. Our first theme of the year is Risks and Consequences, and one of the featured books is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I would like a class set of the chapter book, so everyone has the book if they would like to join. I believe that this would be a creative way to get students excited about reading and increase their oral ability, as well as, develop higher level thinking. My school is located in Watts and over 95% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Although are test scores are nearing proficiency in math, reading scores are climbing at a much lower rate. 60 % of my students are English language learners, and many of my students are below their required reading proficiency level. I believe the Tiger Book Club and 30 copies of the chapter book will motivate kids to read independently apart from homework and the reading done in class. The discussions twice a month will assist in helping English learners acquire the necessary vocabulary to raise their reading scores, and help all learners think at a higher level. Thank you for making our book club a reality!
