Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Title I school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students, and they get to the school early to eat the breakfast that they don’t get at home. My students eat their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day.
We are a uniform school and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small, and don't really look clean.
The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn, but some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.
My students are 11 and 12-year-old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging, and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.
My classes are all year so I can work with these students in-depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.
My Project
The goal of this project is for students to participate in a community service project during the stressful holidays. Giving during the holidays to less fortunate people is a feel-good opportunity for students that don’t usually have a lot of material possessions to give or receive coming from a high poverty community. Making a gift for someone without a home makes it more meaningful for the giver and the receiver. Creating something that is colorful and handmade is a unique opportunity and gives students the opportunity to experience community service first hand and see the results of their work.
There are many homeless children in this community that will benefit from this community service project of tie-dying colorful shirts and socks for them during the holidays.
This year we will be making tie-dye shirts for homeless students in the community and at our school. Students will also be able to bring in their own shirts to tie-dye as well so there will be a plethora of colorful tie-dye shirts and socks for all for the holidays. Everyone will receive a tie-dye shirt and no one will be left out even if they can’t afford one.
