This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach visual arts at a Title I elementary school in South Carolina. Our school serves 536 students. Our students score lower than the state average on state testing, and we have a minority enrollment of 73%.
Our students do not have access to the arts outside of school, many do not even have their own crayons and pencils.
They have low fine motor skills and are afraid of being creative, fearing they will mess up. This project will help them to feel successful in art.
My Project
We will be using this project to fund tie-dye materials for our school. Students learn color theory by practicing color mixing with dye. Following our normal color unit - the final project will be dying their own fabrics using only three colors. They will be given just the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and have to mix them to make the secondary (orange, green, and purple). By using nontraditional classroom materials students will have a firmer grasp of the concepts. Please help make this experience one that my students will never forget.
