Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in Phoenix, AZ, at a Title I school that services students who often struggle with language barriers. Ninety-nine percent of students at my school are eligible for free/reduced-price lunches. Many times, students come to school in uniforms that are ill-fitting, dirty and have been worn so often, that they are almost falling apart. It would be easy for these students to feel cheated by a school system that does not understand the struggles that they face daily.
In my classroom, we collaborate, we work hard, we push past struggles, and we challenge ourselves to be greater than we were when we started the day.
This is not always easy. There are kids of all reading levels and abilities in my classroom. Sometimes, we make mistakes. However, we do not give up in my classroom. We learn from our mistakes so that we do not make them again. We help each other. We recognize and accept our differences. Most importantly, we appreciate all the different skills, mindsets, and ideas that the people in our class bring to the table.
My Project
Covid has impacted classrooms in a lot of ways. One of the ways that it has impacted classrooms across our campus is by changing the roles of our custodians. Their main job is to ensure that classrooms are sanitized and safe for students. That has meant that a lot of their previous responsibilities have been put on the back burner, such as vacuuming and dusting.
In my classroom, we take pride in keeping our learning environment clean, which means everyone pitches in to ensure that our room stays tidy.
This teaches students responsibility and allows them to take ownership of their classroom. The items I am asking for will help ensure that our classroom stays clean and students are proud of their room. First, a vacuum cleaner will help to make sure the floor is cleaned up daily, instead of once a week. Our school has breakfast in the classroom as part of a grant, and as you can image, elementary school students and food equals a lot of crumbs. When the weather is nice, it is not uncommon for ants or even roaches to stop by for a snack. We would like to avoid those visitors as much as possible. Second, dusters will allow us to keep our vents free from dust, thus helping students breathe easier. Last, sanitizing wipes will help mitigate the spread of germs in between cleanings from our custodians.
With these items, my class will be safer, cleaner, and healthier. This project will aid the whole 3rd grade team on my campus.
