Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
College Board requires students to be strategic while using graphing calculators on the AP Calculus exam. My students don't have enough independent experience with calculators to have the same advantage as other students who take the AP test.
My students are hardworking, curious and committed.
The majority of my students are from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, some are the first to go to college, some are the first to graduate high school. A TI-89 Calculator is a luxury that most of my students cannot afford. It is also another tool they would fully take advantage of in order to succeed on an exam that statistics do not predict they will pass.
My Project
Most of my students started high school with no knowledge of how to use a calculator except for the calculator function on their cell phones. In Pre-Calculus, students were introduced to the graphing calculator in groups where they had to share responsibility of utilizing its many functions. With individual calculators, my students will be able to explore the algebraic and analytic capabilities on their own. As a class, we will be able to build the skill level we need to use the calculator appropriately and to our advantage on the AP exam.
Having individual calculators will give my students the confidence and the experience they need not only to pass the AP exam but to be successful in mathematics in their post-high school endeavors.
Having a calculator at our school for each student will also build a community where a literacy in technology is essential for success.
