My students need graphing calculators to use in AP Statistics. They are required tools for the course whose price tags exceed what many students' families can afford.
I teach mathematics at a diverse district high school in Oakland, CA. Our students are inquisitive, creative, and active. They have the remarkable opportunity to explore new fields of study through our various academies including: Computer; Engineering; Fashion, Arts & Design; Health; and Race, Policy & Law.
As students navigate their four years of study, many find themselves asking: how is math relevant to my life, my future, and the world around me?
Taking a statistics course can help answer these questions. For some students, it is the first time that they see an authentic connection between the abstract field of math and their very real surroundings. It illuminates the numerous and powerful ways that data appears in our world, such as the testing of new vaccines, political polling, sports analytics, and the facts cited in a controversial news article. Most importantly, perhaps, statistics is not reserved solely for students going on to study or work in STEM fields; it is relevant, urgent, and significant to all students.
My Project
Participation in our AP Statistics course has grown steadily over the past several years. Next fall, we are again expanding the program and offering new sections to meet the demand and interest of students.
I'll be teaching two sections of AP Statistics for the first time and need graphing calculators available to my students who can't afford to buy their own.
The course and the AP exam frequently requires students to describe distributions of data, analyze the validity of research studies, and make inferences based on evidence. Graphing calculators help students perform complicated, long-winded procedures in a fraction of the time, freeing their brains up to grapple with these important concepts. This set of calculators is an investment that will impact new classes of students for many years to come.
By donating, you'll help provide TI-84 graphing calculators and batteries for students to use in class and to check out for home use as needed. You'll be handing students a powerful digital tool that will help them access higher-level ideas in a college-level course. You'll be introducing them to their future best friend for the AP Statistics exam in May. I can't thank you enough for your support.
